Charlie Hunter was born in Rhode Island and grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. Hearing his mother play guitar at home made him realize at an early age that he wanted to be a musician. He bought his first guitar when he was 12 years old. He started playing by listening to music on the radio. A few years later he would take lessons from Joe Satriani. By the time he was 18 he had discovered jazz. He was inspired by guitar great Charlie Christian, saxophone icon Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. Hunter immersed himself in jazz and improvisation. In the late 1980’s he went to Europe and played as a street musician.
By 1989, Hunter got his first seven-string guitar, a bass guitar hybrid with two bass strings and five guitar strings. He developed his own style, inventing a new technique that allowed him to play bass as well as complex jazz melodies at the same time. A few years later he added an extra bass string, and now plays a hybrid eight-string guitar.
Charlie moved to New York in 1997 to play with many of New York’s great musicians. Charlie Hunter is more than just a jazz musician. “I just do what I do and keep a positive attitude. I concentrate on things that uplift me spiritually in a musical way”. Charlie Hunter is a true innovator and enjoys collaborating with many different types of musicians.
