Another big name becomes member of the
BHM artist roster. Tania Maria has had a long  and passionate love affair with music.  Born into a family of amateur musicians in São Luis, northwestern Brazil, she began studying the piano at the age of seven and was just 13 when she was the hands-down first-prize winner in a regional competition as the leader of a group started by her father. At the time, bossa nova was all the rage from Rio to New York, adding a peppery touch to jazz like an exotic local spice. Just three years later, however, this talented young woman with a bright future tried to distance herself from music by studying law. Her fingers continued to yearn for the piano, however, and she finally gave in to its insistent call, committing herself to music with more fervor than ever.

As early as 1969, her first musical performances clearly showed her potential and her predilections: an astounding mix of Brazilian rhythms and jazz harmonies, underpinning a remarkable natural gift for spinning sophisticated melodies. After 36 years and 25 albums, and by way of such runaway hits as “Piquant”, “Come With Me” and “Made In New York”, Tania Maria stands out as one of the truly great talents on the Brazilian music scene, where she is known for her unmistakable voice, whose sultry low tones can lay down a serious groove, and for her percussive touch at the piano, where things can suddenly take a more classical turn.
She has also done a lot of traveling in her time, from the Paris nightlife of the 1970s to the New York fusion years in the 1980s; she has lived in both cities, and both continue to live in her. She’s also taken part in virtually every major jazz festival in the world, from Montreux to New Orleans, Tokyo and Nice and the most fabulous clubs like the Blue Note in New York and Tokyo. Tania Maria is an accomplished musician who, though always attracted to swing and jazz, has never forgotten the fundamental beats of her native choro and samba. “Its Only Love“ from the"Grande Dame of Brazil” celebrates her live cd debut on BHM with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band. For the excellent pianist and vocalist, it is her 26th album, which she now releases on BHM after stops at Concord or Blue Note. Jörg Achim Keller, the conductor, adds special drive to the well-known compositions.  "Big Band Samba" with Tania Maria at the piano and the vocals rarely did a big band produce such a hearty Brazilian sound!

"IT WAS A VERY HAPPY TIME. I DISCOVERED A TRULY TALENTED ARRANGER WHO ARRANGED MY MUSIC SUCCESSFULLY AND WITH BEAUTY." Tania Maria

The Frankfurt Radio Bigband

The Frankfurt Radio Bigband is one of the most innovative
German jazz ensembles of our times. Its imaginative
programmes, quality musicians and high-profile projects
have raised the Big Band of the Hessischer Rundfunk
(German Public Radio of Hesse) to the Champions League
of large ensemble jazz music and have set new musical
standards. From swing to the avant-garde, it covers the
entire spectrum of jazz, as well as crossing over into classical, pop
and world music. Together, projects with talented young
musicians and international stars, concerts performances,
radio broadcasts and CD recordings make up what the hr-Bigband is today.

The band's days as a »radio dance orchestra« have long past. Today, the Frankfurt Radio Bigband is a celebrated guest at numerous jazz festivals, and itself invites international jazz stars like Mike Stern, Michael Brecker, Billy Cobham, Django Bates oder John Scofield to perform, driving the development of Big Band music forward with commissions for compositions and arrangement. Thanks to their regular, intensive collaboration to create a tight, homogenous sound ensemble, the Frankfurt Radio Bigband's musicians are ready for any challenge.
Thanks to the wide range of its musical work, the Frankfurt Radio Bigband has become an irreplaceable part of cultural life in Germany.

"Commentaries from Guest Solo Artists and Musical Directors
These people seem to take the music seriously. They don’t take it just as a job. That’s more than you can say about a lot of bands. I’m very impressed with the musicianship and attitude. It makes it quite pleasant. "
Lew Tabackin

"Thank you for the opportunity to play with this fantastic big band, I think the greatest in the world today."
Jack Bruce

"It was a pleasure working with you!"
Billy Cobham
